Cleaning the area from locusts

Unmanned solutions to preserve vegetation

Locusts are one of the most destructive migratory pests in the world. It moves quickly and feeds on large amounts of green vegetation, including a variety of crops, pastures, and fodder. A typical swarm can consist of 150 million locusts per square kilometer and move at a speed of 150 km in one day. One small swarm of one square kilometer can eat the same amount of food in one day as 35,000 people. Existing locust eradication solutions have certain limitations. For ground equipment, this is low productivity and high costs. And for aircraft - high cost, low flight safety, restrictions on runways. For the successful elimination of one swarm of locusts need 250 aircraft or 1800 units of agricultural machinery. The numbers speak for themselves.

How is the process of clearing the area from locusts?

  • Regional spraying. Due to low application costs, drones are suitable for mass use in agriculture, even in Africa, India, and the Middle East. In turn, the mass transition to unlimited use for plant protection allows in the long run to eradicate locust outbreaks.

  • Barrier spraying. For barrier spraying, drones are used taking into account the share of costs for ground equipment or aircraft. They provide a whole new level of protection in endangered areas. High mobility, independence from the runways allows you to significantly bring spraying to the flocks approaching and save more crops, increasing food safety.

  • Spraying from air to air. Drones are ideal for spraying in the air. Due to the high speed and productivity, one drone can: process an area of 4 hectares (which is a strip of 1500 x 24 x 12 m) in 3-4 minutes, including takeoff, landing, and refueling; spray 470,000 m3 of insecticide; eliminate a swarm of locusts in the amount of 3,750,000 individuals and a total weight of 7,500 kg.
